In ancient times and even in the Middle Ages, the volume of available information was limited, and its distribution took a lot of time due to physical constraints and the absence of modern communication means.
In our time, we face the opposite situation: information is available in vast volumes and spreads at an incredible speed. This change, not only in speed but also in the amount and quality of available information, has fundamentally affected our perception of the world. On one hand, we can instantly receive information from all corners of the planet, making us more informed. On the other hand, the abundance of information and its rapid spread can lead to overload and make it difficult to identify the reliability and importance of messages. This also enhances the spread of disinformation and rumors.
Thus, information plays a key role in shaping our perception of the world and requires us to develop new skills in the field of information hygiene and critical thinking:
1. Triangulation: Using multiple sources and points of view to gain a more complete and objective view of an event or topic.
2. Critical Thinking: It’s important to ask questions about the origin of information, its authors, their motives, and methods of data collection. 🤔
3. Checking for Bias: Understanding and accounting for one’s own biases and the biases of sources.
4. Understanding Context: Assessing information in the context of time, culture, and circumstances that may have influenced its creation and interpretation.
5. Referring to Primary Sources: Where possible, refer to primary sources of information, rather than secondary interpretations. 📜
6. Consulting with Experts: Seeking advice from people who specialize in the field and have deep knowledge of the subject.
7. Continuous Learning and Revising Views: Being open to new information and ready to revise one’s views in light of new data. 🧠💪
